Hey guys!

Anyone else got a old Charger DL ? These boats are awesome, I'm wondering if anyone knows how to get a better set up on these boats, I have a 225 Evinrude on the back and on a good day can hit 82mph top speed with a 18p prop. I wanna hit closer to 90 would putting on a bigger prop help maybe a 23p ? Also if my motor red lines at 6000 my the gauge says I rev at 6100 or 6200 would that be bad for my motor?

Welcome to the site! The 18DL is a FANTASTIC boat...one of my all time favourites.

I'm not an Evinrude guy but I would think 6100-6200 would be just fine...I would think you could go a ways over that without worry.

Now...I'm not so sure you're doing 82 with an 18p prop though...maybe a 28. Mine always liked engine height and bow lifting props.

Put up some pictures!

Welcome to the site! Here's a link to a prop slip calculator I use. Basically you punch in your top rpm, prop pitch, and gear ratio and it gives your theoretical top speed. Punch in actual speed and it gives prop
Slip percentage.
http://www.hydrostreamforums.com/prop-slip-calculator

The DL will likely be in the 15 percent range depending on setup. So if you punch all your numbers in you can see why someone would question top speed. I'd say your speedo is lying, as most pitot speedos do. Time for a GPS and get out for a run with some of us! Love the looks of a good clean DL...

You'll see low 80's with that rig.....but not with a 23".
My DL ran 80 with a 2.4 / 200 spinning a 28" big ear chopper.
Is your Erude bolted to the transom or you running a setback / lift?
I've got a couple props you could try that would work nice on your setup.

6" jackplate with a lwp nosecone on the lower, start with the propshaft about even with the pad and move it up to 1/2" above or so I would say is close. 27pitch solas scorpion worked well on Toms( Wildcats) dl, an origional 26p raker or 28p Mazco re3. What year is the 225? there are a few things you can do to wake it up as well.As offered above try all the props you can, best way to find your ultimate setup. Still working on mine after 4 years lol.

I was 80 with Doks old 28 chopper on a 225 Yammi. about 6300 RPM. Running the prop shaft about 1" below the pad. I think it was about 14% slip???? Best I did with a 23 laser II was 70 running about 7000 RPM.

Great boats. Mine was an 83 and solid as a rock. Full balsa everywhere. Even the transom was balsa.

Not sure about your numbers? Are you using a GPS to measure the speed? If not - you should check that out. The water based speedos can be big fat liars. Either way - too slow or too fast.

Lets see some pics.

Here is a link to a post that talks about how to do it

Yes welcome aboard! The cool thing about DLs is that there are a few on this site and seemingly half of everyone else had one lol! I have not really hunted for a big number as the fastest I saw on GPS was just shy of 73 mph with a 28 big ear chopper. Stock 200 hp Yamaha, No low water pickups and the bullet was below the pad. I may get my spare gear case coned this winter if I have time and I will likley play around with more setback and setup too. I know my hull before me ran just shy of 80.

Either way have fun and enjoy the site!
