Most people extended the shortshaft motors to use on newer recreational speedboats etc.
After about 1974 not many transoms were 15 inch, they all went to 20 inch. (uk and Europe )
You used to be able to simply buy extension kits to make any short shaft into a long shaft.
I think all the omc stuff was alloy and others cheap after market stuff.
a lot of the commercial omc triples had the extension kits on them, some were real ugly too.
In the uk the short (15 inch) mids have not been wanted at all since the late 70's,.
