Back in the 1960’s the old know it all mechanics would tell you the best block to start with was a super high mileage motor that was still running. The thought was these motors have gone thru thousands of heat cycles and any flaws in the casting would be gone. These were car cast iron blocks. I can remember going to the junk yard and searching out a Chevy 283 from a taxi with 300,000 miles on it. That rebuild turned out great and 10 years later and thousands of miles later it was still going strong.
So the question is.....what about an aluminum block outboard motor? You can find terrible beat up looking old outboards that for some reason the powerhead specifications are just like new. There must be a reason why these diamonds in the rough have lasted. I would think they were just better in the first place and would be the best rebuilder.
