i have a hydraulic Jack plate that is quite ugly. and i'm going to take it apart to clean it and polish it..

any recommendations on how i should go about making it pretty... Products, step by step, electric power tools?

keep in mind i'm not patient and i want to do it in the least amount of labour possible.

Check out http://www.caswellcanada.ca. Polishing kits and "how to" instructions can all be found on the webpage. If you just want to give it a fresh brushed look, just get some foam sanding blocks and rub it with that. If you want a high shine, you will likely have to sand with different grits, and then buff with different compounds.

My old boss had bare aluminum wheels on his 350z, and a few times a year he would take a buffing wheel with some Wenol and polish them. It worked really well, cut oxidization and dirt really quickly. But he never sealed it after. I told him to try Zoop's seal, I've seen it used before, but haven't tried it myself.

Send it out! I know a guy on Nugget in Scarborough that does it.
Makes it real easy for you! Deliver, wait, pay and take it away.

I use Flitz have buffed everything from leading edges of jets to headlights on a car. Will make aluminum show like chrome and for me doesn't seem to need as many steps as a lot of polishes. And a plus you can polish any other part of your boat and motor with it.

For the basic clean-up, use ivory snow crystal laundry detergent, water, bucket and a scotch brite pad....you will be surprised at how well that looks just after that.
