Post subject:  New H.D. battery.

Wanted to ask a question about batteries in the spring. Does anyone feel that a new heavy duty battery with high CCA would be beneficial for a performance engine as opposed to using an older battery that seems OK, but is probably lower on voltage, and yet will still start the engine once it has been fully charged in the spring?

Has anyone found that a new H.D. battery has noticeably improved the performance of their engine over a recently replaced older unit? Especially if their engine has EFI ?

There's a lot to be said about batteries with outboard motors. Whether to use spiral cell or not, high amperage or not.... I always say get the physically biggest battery to fit your application with a modest cranking amperage. Look for reserve capacity above all. I could go into detail for my reasons if you wish, just don't have the time to type it all out right now lol...

Voltage is critical!
Most computers are set up to go into a default mode when they see low voltage.
I believe Merc require a minimum of 12.5v or they go super rich.
The E-Tec on my newfie boat was running like crap last year. The battery was old and undersized as far as I was concerned. Swapped to the biggest group 24 I could get and it woke right up. Smoother running and lower fuel consumption.
Keep the old one as a booster and get a new one.

The Verados are the same. Merc even sends nuts to use on the battery in place of wing-nuts to ensure a good connection.

Put in the BEST. When your sitting in the middle of the lake (your just out testing and NO one else is around) you'll wish you had . This things are toys that can kill, so use the best. Tried to kill myself too many times. When your drag racing take out the weight, lake running, put in the weight.

I'd go with an Odyssey.
I just put a 925 in my Comp.

Have you run an Odyssey in a boat yet Greg? I've run them in cars before, but have heard stator charging systems don't like the lower internal resistance.

I know several guys that run them with no issues.
I've run one in my sled for 6 years (same battery!), no issues.

I've run an Odyssey for 5 or 6 seasons in the SRV...no issues...which is good because I can't really get to it without removing the fuel tank lol.
