Post subject:  60hp OMC starting problems

I have a 1984 60hp 3cyl evinrude had not run in 2 years. Starts right up runs good idles good motor not getting hot , but if I shut it of and then try to restart there is nothing after a minute of trying the key, it will suddenly turn over and fire up . Only thing I notice is that the rectifier is getting hot ,could this be the problem or could it be a bad ignition switch or could it be something else ? Thanks any help would be great.

It turns over with the starter but won't fire or the starter won't spin?

does nothing no clicking of the solenoid or anything . that's why I was wondering if it could be a bad ignition switch . Had one go bad in another boat but when it went it would not start at all.

Try putting power direct to the starter & see if it works.
If it does then you know it's between the starter and the key. If it doesn't then you know it's something with starter.
When the starter does work does it disengage after the engine starts?

yep the starter disengages fine . I am starting to think it could be a loose connection or a bad ignition switch . Should the rectifier get hot to the touch when the motor is running?

Likely a bad ground. Common with the old 49 OMC. Move the ground battery connection from the side cover to a bolt on the starter. There is a small ground wire on the starter selenoid that runs from a terminal to the mounting bolt on the block with the bracket. Run a ground wire from there to the battery cable connection on the starter.
