Post subject:  Pinning engine mounts !!!

Ok this is another question that has me a touch baffled at the moment.

Now I have seen plenty of places where people are pinning the mounts to stiffen them up instead of having full solids.
I can understand this as its cheaper easier and you know the mount will definitely fit as per original.

BUT it seems that most people are using stainless pins/ bolts or rod in the aluminium mounts !!!
now I thought that stainless against aluminium is not a good idea due to corrosion problems.
stainless and alloy touching causing a reaction etc ?

would it not be better to use steel and then cover any exposed areas with a rubber solution ?
or would this be ok to use stainless and cover with a solution ?

If you're pinning them you can use whatever...because you're not trying to undo a bolt.

Thanks DoctorC

So its not going to cause any corrosion too fast then.
I wasn't sure if the stainless against the alloy would cause a anode type reaction and eat away at the alloy pretty fast.
I think the alloy used will be of very low grade, as the top mount alloy casting is very poor quality.
Although the bottom mounts were made by a different company for OMC so might be better quality alloy ?

the rubber part in between the alloy parts is terribly weak and soft. probably ok for a slow pleasure cruiser where the
vibration would be more of a pain for passengers.

But what you say now makes sense, as its not nuts and bolts.
I shall pin a old set of mounts and see how I get on.
just got to set up the bench drill now and see what happens.
