This video of an SST.60 on a commercial 13 foot tunnel demonstrates just how high you can run an outboard with stock water pickups on the gearcase.
It seems like a mistake that the driver leaves his power jack plate in the high position at the start of the video.
You can see the water pickups on the side of the gearcase. The motor is getting water from the spray off the boat.
The driver then lowers the motor down about 2.5 inches .

Kyle actually ran an external pickup on that set up all the stock water pick ups where filled in

The pickup tube must be connected on the other side.
