I have built a 2 person SportsHydroplane: http://svensons.com/boat/?p=HydroPlanes/SportsHydro I used marine grade ply for the bottom. The plans say to power it with a 50HP. Would a 1962 Mercury 500 be worth owning? Its priced under a thou. Too finicky an engine? Buy a Johnson? Get one from the 70's? I have not worked on an outboard engine but I'm willing to do basic service - winterizing etc, All advice greatly appreciated. Cheers, SH

If you want to stay in the 50hp range the Yami is great or the little e-rude twin. If you're not a full on mechanic I don't think owning an old motor of any sort is a great idea.. |

2.0 liter Merc. Didn't Yammi make a 3 cylinder 90 hp? If you look at the weight of an old Merc 50 and compare it to a newer motor it'll open up a world of possibilitys. |

Post some pics of your new boat you have built! I would stick with a newer motor as well unless you are willing and able to wrench around on the old motors or looking for a time piece accurate motor to match the boat. It looks like a neat boat though that would look just fine with a newer motor.. Welcome to the site! |
