I'm planning on painting a couple of lower units and I'm wondering what specific primer and paint products, and then schedule you guys recommend for a lower unit.

So far my research has lead me to a self-etching primer, and then automotive top/clear or one stage (urethane, I'm guessing). Looks like there might need to be a sealer or epoxy primer in between the self-etch primer and colour top coat. I'm not 100% sure and looking for suggestions here.

BTW, this is for a 1997 Yamaha so if you have any good paint code matches send em my way.

thanks,
M

Matt,

yes use a self etching primer, then you can use a urethane primer and sand imperfections out of it, or if you dont want to sand use a sealer then paint, base clear, ive used imron clear, or a single stage urethane .
My 750 motor has a DTM epoxy(direct to metal) on it, which could have just been painted over too.
IF you use spray bombs it will not stick near as good as mixing it and using a paint gun, it depends how picky and how long you want it to last

Avoid the Cole Yamaha paint! it causes the seat to rip out of the boat

Thanks Jer,

The self etching primer I ordered is rattle can but was recommended as good by someone else online doing outboard restos:

The epoxy primer or sealer, then base/clear I'm getting a bud to do as he does auto paint work for a living. The clear is PPG EC530.

Was wondering how long the base/clear will hold up under water and with that kind of water flow over it. This lower wont stay submerged for very long. Maybe a week or two at a time once a summer.

Matt , you can use that spray bomb etch primer, but if you want the very very best(or over kill) get your buddy to mix and spray some etch primer or direct to metal epoxy.for a paint code maybe he can scan it
I sprayed my v-6 mariner lower with water based basecoat and imron clear 6+ years ago and it still looks the same as when i did it.. i would have thought the basecoat may not hold up but it has,for non metallic colours you could use single stage urethane

Ya...thats only for the case paint lol. My primer held up very well...

Matt....just to clarify...I spray bombed my lower on the voodoo....I think it lasted about a season but it decided to peel off all at once while prop testing with LC. It cause a blowout and hook...and the seat to rip out...and my shoulder to be very sore for a couple of weeks lol.

Jeremy's work is top notch...like super awesomely top notch from what I've seen. He knows his shit.
