does anyone on here have any experience building sled motors ?

im wondering about pistons

oem cast pistons, vs aftermarket (spx) vs forged (wiseco) .

who has an opinion,

iv had luck with spx in trail sleds like my indy 440-500, i always rebuild my sno pros with OEM cast cat pistons, never try'd a wiseco in a sled, iv heard horror stories. and i haven't try'd spx in a nikasil bore.

i'm thinking about rebuilding my 04 f7 AND 03 XCR 800, i planed on using oem parts in the f7 and maby giving the spx pistons a go in the XCR with OEM gaskets. (iv had spx gaskets fail) any thoughts, mabe try wiseco in the xcr?

for 3 pistons gaskets and crank seals , spx $320 + tax,. wiseco is $414 no seals. dont know oem

f7 is $400 for oem pistons, (just cast pistons,) plus gaskets and seals ? $100. , spx is $240 for 2 pistons gaskets and seals, wiseco is $304 pistons and gaskets.

I've been using aftermarket pistons for my whole life...and I've blown up lots of shit. Don't worry...buy the SPX's if you actually need pistons and go nuts. I know the aftermarket and OEM yamaha pistons are both ART...so I'm thinking they come from the same place anyways.

Intersting you say that about ART, when my pistons for my mariner came from merc, they were ART..no wonder it took so long it was like waitng for a yamaha part!

You actually were...not a Yamaha part but a Japanese piston. it was actually mentioned in the history of the merc v6 on SD that they had to source their pistons from ART in Japan to get the quality they needed.

Boomer, Craig Fraser has built many, many sled engines; for years he factory raced in the US.
Let me know if you want his #, lives at 6ML, Crooked Bay Rd.

If you're factory sponsored you tend to use factory parts...because you have a budget...at least we did. If we didn't have the budget we would have been running aftermarket cast pistons. The wisecos in a nic motor would worry me since you can't adjust the clearances for the forged slug.

FWIW Jordan's 700 viper made close to 190hp and turned 10k and never once had a motor issue...but we had Yamaha's parts room to play with so I put pistons in it At the beginning of each season.
