When the hull is a 1972 it could cost more $ to refresh it than it's worth compared to buying a new Critchfield. Sometimes you get lucky. In their day this combo was a good performer. It would be more competitive in T750 with a 60 hp 4 stroke Mercury, OMC triple or yamaha. Or you could restore it to look like an original 1972 FE raceboat and run a period correct OMC triple.

I was asked why the MX13 was only in production for approximately 3 years. Was it a poor design?

The reason was the second fire Checkmate had at their plant in 1973 or 1974. MX13 molds were destroyed by that fire. Checkmate did build several light weight MX13 race only boats. I was lucky enough to get one [red with black fog]. There were a least two other light weighs that came to Toronto. A solid white and a blue one. I remember seeing both those boats at Quinn's. The Delta hull and 1975 nitro case 75 hp OMC's appeared in 1975 and they changed FE class. Prior to that FE was a low to mid 50 mph class and the MX13 was very competitive.
Checkmate also lost their narrow MX15 molds in the same fire. It too was a fast boat and a better race boat than the later wider replacement. Very competitive with the 15 Allisons. There were a least 3 MX15 race versions sold thru Quinn's [a gold one, a silver one and a copper one].
We were not allowed power trim or set backs back then and they will make a big improvement in performance.
