What do you guys think of putting Baystar hydraulic steering in a Voodoo (70 hp Johnny cottage boat)? It lists hp up to 150, speed up to 55 mph but says not for high performance applications? Thought this might be a good option but not sure.
I'm just starting to get my list of parts together and I don't see any dual cable steering kits that aren't NFB.

Baystar is fine IMO for a 70 as far as hardware goes...I've never driven anything other than a tin boat with it installed though so I really don't know how it will feel in a voodoo. NFB sucks..

What's the issue with NFB?

The No Feed Backness of it. There is no "feel" which is bad, especially in a little boat and the mechanism that keeps the wheel from spinning freely causes the helm to "stick" in place when you're not actually steering...so you need added force to unstick the wheel...which unsettles the boat. I get a lot of complaints about it in the tin boats we sell and none of them would give you the same ride as jerking the wheel around in a voodoo lol.

I have Nfb in my vision and so far I hate it. I'd does exactly what you describe. Some guys have said its set up wrong and it actually can work better than a ride guide setup. I bought a ride guide rack and helm to replace it, but am getting conflicting opinions. If I do swap, can I use my same cables, or do I need ride guide specific cables?

Yup, that would suck.
On a small hull like a voodoo why not run strings and be done with it?
Simple & cost effective (cheap).

how much does it cost to put strings in a boat like a voo-doo. i thought it was costly. ...and can't you get teleflex rack without the nfbness..??? i need steering for my baja so im learning here too ,

I've run the nfb in the 13 checkmate and my cousins 15 checkmate, it sucks compared to it being removed. We swapped our helm for one from a single ride guide system and it works beautifully. My cousins nfb broke and locked the steering just like mine did, but I opened it up and removed the little plastic "stops" for the rollers and it works 10x better then it ever did. All in all a simple improvement if you went to the nfb steering.

K wait... I just have to change the helm? Do the cables swap over??

you dont even have to do that,, 13 checkmate says you can take it appart and remove the nfb,.. iv heard of this before,, just haven't had to do it yet,,
