check out the text regarding rev limiter and lower size/ratio...

4.25" gearcase is the same size as my old XR4 - 14" diameter props would be too big. 2.33 gears seems wrong as well.

It's an odd combo...like a short 60 command thrust with 300 more rpm. Maybe for racing pontoons...

Seems like it might be targeting small flats boats or something similar.

A 60hp pontoon class would be interesting, if maybe they raced a figure eight!

The wording really makes it out to be a flats boat motor - so I wonder if it has solid mounts.

The Formula Race 60 is still listed - I hope they up the limiter on that one too, but I think 6300 is only 100rpm more than the Formula Race 60..?

The formula race 60 is the race engine, On f4s tunnel boats in europe this engine pushes them mid to high 70's, The also use them on 16' v60 hulls in europe and it pushes them into the 60's on the hulls that weigh 1150+lbs race ready. There are others using it on smaller v hulls and they are seeing 65+ The two engines are similar but a lot different. its the same block, same rpm. Both 60.8 cubic inch displacement. The formula race on their website says its limiter is 6000, it is not it is 6250 and a hard limiter at 6300. In addition they are marketing the 60r as a 1 liter but the formula race is 995cc they likley rounded up for marketing. The bore and stroke for both is the same on both. The new 60r is marketed as a small flats boats engine that is very popular nowadays. They needed to fill that hp range with an "R" motor. There are no other 15" mid motors in this hp range in the market merc is trying to get in on it. The difference between this engine and the Formula race is:The new 60r is 20lbs heavier, ( likely due to gearcase) The 60r has a 2:33 gear box and is huge at 4.25" formula race has a 1:83 at 3 3/4", the formula race has solid motor mounts the 60r does not, the formula race has wing plate mounts on the mid and comes with wing plates, this 60r does not. Both have 6300 limiter and likely tuned the same so its a step up from fishing motor. Fishing motor makes just over 60hp at 5800 rpm, the formula race and presumably 60r make closer to 70 at 6300. 60 r can have up to 5 year warranty, formula race, no warranty. i like this idea, im hoping it helps push other manufactures for make small race style engines again, Etec 60 should come with 15" mid and a small race gear ratio lower unit! hopefully this puts the competition out there. I must add these engines are extremely reliable given they are actually made in china, at least they were, they may have switched with this new 60, but I have seen this powerhead with over 10,000 hours on it... yes that's a lot.

Right on! I can/do run at 6200-6250 rpm, watch the gauge a bit at those rpms. Only hit the limiter once, in some moderate waves, which may have caused a bit of fluctuation in rpms, and that cut much of the power for a short while, then came back to full power [not ideal during a race, I suppose]. Steady 63 mph at 6200 rpm, sometimes goes for a ways at 64, occasionally up to 65, and that on a relatively heavy boat, but those top end speeds not really feasible on our race courses.

Tom the GT60 UIM Class minimum weight is 772 lbs.

The British Speed Record is 64 mph.
The World Speed Record is 69 mph.

GT60 runs as a separate class in Europe so ALL the motors are the same 4 strokes running 772 lbs.
They ALL have the same performance characteristics unlike you running with the 2 stroke T750 boats at 594 lbs.
The out of the box performance of the 60 Mercury 4 stroke is equal to the 60 hp 59 cubic inch 2 stroke and better than the 52 or 49 cubic inch 2 stroke.

THE KEY IS WEIGHT!
The world record at 69 mph shows the motor has the speed.
A lighter weight closer to 594 lb will allow you to give up some top speed and replace it with the acceleration necessary to run with the OMC 2 strokes.
One of Top Guns new Critchfields with no driver, and an Formula 60 will weigh approximately 540 lbs.
Your top speed will still be 63-64 mph but you will get to that speed quicker.
Now you are very competitive with the top 2 strokes.

Although I liked what I saw when I got a chance to try Tom's boat/motor, the problem with putting it on a light weight boat would be getting to CoG in the right spot..

You'd need an extra light boat so you can put weight in the front to move the CoG forward?

I think you’d have a tough time getting the boat and motor to come in at 540, the motor alone is 247, add controls, wing plates etc. It would be neat to see one tried on a light Hull to see how good you could get it to work
